What is Organic Farming and How Does it Benefit the Planet?

Every day we’re bombarded with choices and this is almost never as true as when we’re grocery shopping. Our supermarket aisles are lined with every color and shape of products and produce. As we try to make healthier choices, it can be confusing. Why bother to select organics when the regular produce is a few cents cheaper? We’ve been told it’s better for us, but why? What’s so great about organic food? It turns out, a lot. Not only is organic food better for human consumption, but it’s also great for the planet!

I won’t get into the business of it, but on a personal level I can’t even believe non-organic produce is legal to sell commercially. It’s LITERALLY slowly killing us all. I genuinely hope you’ll consider switching to organic produce because it’s so much better for your skin, your health, and the world.

Here are 8 reasons we LOVE organics!

It tastes better (and is nutrient-dense):Let’s face it, we don’t just eat for sustenance. We like to savor our food, often with friends and family. So taste matters a lot. Organic produce is grown in nutrient-rich soil, so the resulting fruits and veggies are generally more flavorful and packed with more vitamins and minerals. If you consider yourself a home cook, organic produce is a dream.

It’s GMO-Free:Genetically modified organisms are plants and animals that have had their genomes altered for various reasons. GMOs are often created and treated with harsh chemicals. In order for food to qualify as certified organic, it has to be 100% GMO-free. Sure, you may get the funky looking carrot or the bell pepper that looks more like a zucchini than a pepper, but they’ll taste a lot better and fuel your body with more nutrients.

It’s Good for the Soil:Organic produce is never treated with harmful herbicides or pesticides, which can kill all the helpful living organisms in the soil. For example, worms keep the soil aerated allowing plants to grow naturally.  Organic farming keeps the soil clean and safe, which also helps prevent drainage of pesticides into local rivers and streams.

It’s Good for the Bees:You’ve probably heard that bees are in serious danger. Organic farming supports all kinds of pollinators by not treating with pesticides. It maintains our beautiful biodiversity and keeps our planet safe. Save the bees! Go organic!

It’s Safer for Your Community:Pesticides and herbicides can do a lot of harm to the people and the communities they are used in. Farmers who work on commercial farms that are treated with harmful chemicals are at a higher risk for illness and disease than farmers on organic farms. Community water sources and air can also become polluted with pesticides. Choosing organic foods is a great way to give back to your local community.

It’s Better for the Ocean: Whatever ends up in the soil, lakes, and streams eventually ends up in the ocean. By supporting organic farming practices and buying organic, you are contributing to keeping the ocean safe! This is a HUGE benefit, as healthy oceans are rapidly deteriorating.

And the #1 Reason we love organic? They won’t make you sick!

When you choose all organics, you’ll be doing something incredible for the planet and your body. But something you may not realize is you’ll also be doing incredible things for your skin. All the toxins in non-organic produce seep into your skin and leave all kinds of skin issues behind. The choice to go organic is the choice to embrace clean, clear, healthy skin.

It comes down to this. You can pay slightly more today for organic produce or you can pay MUCH more later in life on hospital bills, medications, doctors visits, and time off work.
